 Complete Biographical Sketch

Melba A. Hern√°ndez-Tejada is a clinical psychologist and postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Health Disparities Research at the Medical University of South Carolina. She received her graduate and undergraduate training in her home country, Venezuela, at Simon Bolivar University (2004) and Central University of Venezuela (1997).  In Venezuela as an Assistant and later Associate Professor at Simon Bolivar University, she worked in the Department of Behavioral Sciences, Psychophysiology Section where she used laboratory stressor reproduction to study risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases, as well as teaching classes in this area of research. She has also investigated other stress areas such a PTSD, and other populations involving older adults (elder mistreatment) and children (psychological aspects of congenital heart disease). Currently, she is working with the Hispanic population with diabetes in the Charleston area. Her goal is to reach this population, reduce health care disparities, and in so doing offer adequate attention to those with diabetes in order to increase their quality of life.
