Applications will be received from postdoctoral researchers either currently at MUSC or in the process of applying for a postdoctoral position with an approved research mentor.  This program is only open to individuals who are either a US citizen or permanent resident.  Applicants must have satisfied all degree requirements and have a postdoctoral scholar appointment at MUSC by the first of the month following the application due date.  Strengths of the research plan and pedagogy interests will be weighted equally in evaluation of applicants. 

Proposal Content:

  1. By the applicant
    1. Cover letter briefly describing reasons for applying to the program and name of research mentor at MUSC
    2. Personal statement (4 page limit) that describes:
      1. career goals and teaching philosophy
      2. benefits of participation in the program as it relates to research
      3. description of current or anticipated research project
      4. prior teaching activities and/or training received
      5. statement of commitment of 25% effort for mentored teaching activities
      6. plans for staying connected with research activities at MUSC during the teaching externship
    3. Current biographical sketch (in either NIH or NSF format)
  2. From the applicant's research mentor
    1. Letter of support addressing:
      1. the applicant's potential for an academic career
      2. the applicant's suitability for the MUSC-Claflin IRACDA Program
      3. statement acknowledging 25% release time for the applicant's teaching activities and plans for maintaining communication
      4. mentoring plan for the applicant
    2. Current biographical sketch (in either NIH or NSF format)
    3. Current and pending support (in either NIH or NSF format)
  3. Two letters of recommendation from individuals (other than the research mentor) familiar with the applicant's accomplishments and career potential (to or by fax to 843-876-2416)
  4. Documentation of degree credentials (letter from Dean or copy of diploma)
  5. Check list

Proposal Format:

Applications that do not adhere to the format below will be returned.

  • Single-spaced, no more than 6 lines per inch, all margins at least one inch
  • Text must be in Arial, Helvetica, Palatino Linotype or Georgia fonts, no smaller than 11 points (figure legends no smaller than 9 points).  Special characters or symbols can be used but must be of same size of other text, no more than 15 characters and spaces per inch
  • Each page (except cover letter) should have applicant's name as a header in the top right hand corner with sequential page numbers in the footer
